Elma Beskuit started as a hobby in 2015. Elma (Mom) delivered her first batch of rusks to a small coffee shop — just a few packets per week. That small beginning steadily grew into a thriving little business, eventually supplying most Spar stores in the Helderberg area, as well as Brackenfell, Stellenbosch and Paarl.
Meanwhile, daughter Lindel had been living and working in Dubai for four years. Not yet ready to return home, she started her own rusk venture in the UAE — supplying rusks and Amarula milk tarts to expats — and ran it very successfully for a year before her roots called her back to South Africa.
In early 2020, they joined forces. New clients — delis, coffee shops, and butcheries — joined the family. Even during lockdown, being in the food business proved a blessing, as they continued delivering to Spar and other stores under permit.
Elma's hobby turns into a small business, supplying a local coffee shop with homemade rusks.
Spar stores in Helderberg, Brackenfell, Stellenbosch and Paarl added to the growing client base.
Lindel launches an Elma Beskuit venture in the UAE, supplying expats with rusks and Amarula milk tarts.
Lindel returns to SA and the two join forces. New clients, new recipes, new chapter — even through a pandemic.

In mid-2024, we realised it was time to think outside the box. A little scared, very adventurous, and full of trust and belief, we opened our "little gem" in Somerset West — proudly called Baker & Mom. Still deciding whether we're a home industry, a deli, or a coffee shop? Well, why choose one when you can be everything?!
As faith and family are the cornerstones of everything we do, our family in the UAE remain very involved — Elmarie (Lindel's sister) helped with the creative side of Baker & Mom and continues the Elma Beskuit tradition in the UAE.
Today, Baker & Mom (Pty) Ltd is situated in Somerset West, offering rusks, macarons, milk tarts (Amarula and plain), a variety of desserts, and freshly baked sourdough waffles, snacks, granola, sandwich loaves and much more.
